A mirror.
This object refers directly to many movies, stories, fairy tales and mythologies, and provokes existential and terrible questions linked to looking deeply within our own self.

To which integrity do we refer while looking into our own eyes? Do we reflect what is being plotted behind the scenes? We can always try saving grace, objectively our reflection lies.

Sound and choreography are like a common source of interiority creating subjective material, leaving space to voids, to phantasmagorical breakaways…

Mélissa Von Vépy and Stéphan Oliva

A mirror, that site of re:petitions, hangs above our eyes re:flecting the landscape surrounding it. On stage, a piano multiplies in sonic images the encounter between a dancer and a mirror. She observes herself on it, reaches it in the air, and passes through it to discover (herself on) the other side...

Musician and dancer create an intimate moment of simple beauty, on the edge of the anxieties and fragilities of a subject when facing his/her own image – his/her re:flex. The mirror does not cease to evoke the side it does not show, the intangible site of the inner being.

Premiered in 2009 at the Festival d’Avignon, Miroir Miroir is the result of a choreographic, musical and cinematographic exploration by Melissa Von Vépy, Stéphan Oliva, and Angélique Willkie.

Von Vépy, born in Geneva (Switzerland) was trained as trapeze artist and she is a co-founder Cie. Moglice – Von Verx (created in 2000 with Chloé Moglia). In their company Von Vépy and Moglia co-created and presented various works: “Un certain endroit du ventre” (A specific place in the stomach), “Temps troubles” (Troubled Times), “I look up, I look down…”, “Une jambe n’est pas une aile / Nimbus / Croc” (A leg is not a wing/ Nimbus/Croc) and “Dans la gueule du ciel” (In the mouth of the sky), this last one in collaboration with the actor Peter James. In 2007 the company received the award “Arts du Cirque”, do SACD – Societé d’Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (Society of Drama Authors and Composers).

Oliva, French pianist, he was first noticed on the late 80’s for his sensitive performances. His work is eclectic and original, as one can see in his tributes to various pianists such as Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano, Paul Motian, Giacinto Scelsi, Paul Auster, Bernard Herrmann and Harlem Piano Stride, and also in his last work “Little Nemo”. He has played with various musicians like Bruno Chevillon, Paul Motian, Jean-Marc Foltz, François Raulin, Claude Tchamitchian, Jean-Pierre Jullian, Christophe Monniot, Linda Sharrock, Joey Baron, and Suzanne Abbuehl, among others. A film-lover, he develops work improvising in solo concerts on film soundtracks and playing in cine-concerns on non-speaking films. He also composes and plays in short and long films, some of them directed by Jacques Maillot. Since 2006, he works regularly with the actress and singer Hanna Schygulla.

Willkie, dancer from Jamaica, was trained in dance at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre. After her first work season in Quebec, she went to Europe, where she is now based – for 17 years she has been performing her own creations and working with a number of companies. In Belgium she collaborated with Les ballets C de la B and Needcompany, as singer, and with Zap Mama, dEUS, and DAAU. She took part in various projects with Ultima Vez Company/ Wim Vandekeybus (Bruxells), Henny Jurriens Stichting (Amsterdam), Circuit-Est (Montreal), SEAD (Salzburg), and ImPulsTanz. She also develops pedagogic work as voice and dance coach, and also as playwright and assistant to dance-theater productions.
