Video has been occupying, during its yet short existence, a privileged position in relation to performing arts and practices, in realms which can be identified as documentation, creative and even performative. Organized around the debate on documentation, this Video-Performance Showroom tries to approach these modalities by means of sessions which take place in various sites around the city. The choice of exhibiting the videos in public spaces (shop-windows, houses and institutional spaces whose collaboration we appreciate) allows us to literally bring to streets performance in video and performance for video, calling the spectator to watch and actively participate in the installation proposals. It is also necessary to mention the exhibition of films such as Zidane (at IPJ), by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, a work focused on Zidane’s sport performance and which show a whole cluster of documenting machinery very close to documental excellence. Similarly, the films about land-art, which will be exhibited at the terrace of Tuareg, should be mentioned; as well as the Late Night session, dedicated to extreme performance - the materials exhibited, although chocking, are necessary to complete the Show’s approach; and finally the video-documentation of Vera Mantero’s works, which can be watched at the Temporary Documentation Center installed at the documental exhibition on the dancer’s choreographic work, A dança do existir, to be visited at Convento dos Remédios through September 30th. In each case, these materials allow us to map ways of documenting performing arts practices, as well as artists and trends, genres and borders in confrontation. We organize the Festival for the city. We count on it! We count on you! |
